One of the many questions I get on a daily basis is how I made a living from blogging. Continue reading to learn more about my personal story.
SHOP THE POST
“Everyone is creative, but we are only as creative as we allow ourselves to be.” Martellus Bennett
It took me 1.5 years before I was able to quit my full-time job to become a full-time publisher. Some of you might consider a year and half a short period of time, and perhaps it is, but let me tell you: Those 1.5 years felt like an eternity to me. They were filled with lots of hard work, and many sleepless nights. You may remember that I actually had a full-time corporate job before I ended up blogging professionally. I would come home from work, have dinner with my family and then I would literally return back to work (editing content for my blog). I worked non-stop.
So, what are the keys to create a living from blogging?
Build a community and be genuine. Stop thinking about your numbers and stats but instead reach out to follow bloggers, and start networking!
Create a niche. Know your readers and follow your instincts! If you love fashion ask yourself: Is my style high-end or low-end? For example, I like to mix and match high vs low end. So, I make sure I offer both on my blog. My niche would be middle to upper-middle class.
Take your time. I cannot stress this enough. Do not rush, and take your time. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and don’t compare yourself to other bloggers. We all grow at different rates –comparing yourself will only hinder you of becoming the best version of yourself.
Support one another. Don’t bring each other down but instead help a sister out! Throughout the Bible we see instructions to encourage one another and verses that are meant to encourage us.
Do you have more key points to add? If so, let me me know by commenting below!
PS: These pictures were taken a Buckingham Fountain, Chicago. It’s one of my favorite places in the city since my husband and I had our first date there!
As always, thanks much for reading and have a safe & fabulous 4th of July Weekend!
You’re such an inspiration, Vanessa! I can completely relate to you, I literally work 24/7 between my PR firm and my blog and it’s definitely hard work but it is so rewarding! Kuddos to you for making it full- time! I so agree with all of your advice and appreciate you sharing your wisdom. On another note, I adore this bright yellow OTS top on you… so cute!
Thank you for sharing your story. You are right women do tend to be jealous of one another and I see no reason why. I applaud you for sticking with your dream and finding the success you have.
You were able to achieve your goal and it’s an amazing thing!!! I rather close today… but I hope we will stay in touch!!!
You look gorgeous!
Kisses! F.
Firstly let me say I love what your wearing you always love ok so fabulous. Secondly every point you mention I totally agree with you.. It’s not a race it’s a Joubert and you need to take your time special if ur in it for the long run. It’s hard work but very rewarding you definitely an inspiration to me. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful post. Happy 4th of July weekend X
Thank you for your sharing your experience Vanessa! You are such an inspiration and I agree that supporting each other is so important, as well as growing at your own speed and not comparing yourself to others.
On another note, I love your outfit – it’s so summery!

Hey V! Great post! The white pants were a great choice to neutralize the bright top and bold lip you’re rocking:) You are DEF fashion blogger royalty and I want you to know that I nominated you for the Sunshine Blogger Award! Its super fun and allows you to reflect on your blossoming blog. All of the info is on my page. Keep up the good work love:)
You know how proud I am of you!! And more we have in common, my husband and I shared a kiss by the Buckingham fountain one late night on a walk through the city. That yellow off the shoulder is so beautiful and love your golden hair shining in the sunshine!! Here’s hoping you and your family have the BEST 4th weekend!! Much Love to you all!!
I just put a little text in my post of today saying the same thing about numbers! Most important is that we love what we do! Have a great weekend Vanessa! http://www.nancysfashionstyle.com
Love this perfect summer look! I need that blouse! Thanks for sharing y tips for making blogging a full-time job. I’m getting there slowly and appreciate your encouragement and inspiration. Have a terrific weekend Vanessa!
Dear Lifehacker, I’m thinking about starting my own blog. I don’t expect it to make me stinking rich, but what are the chances I can quit my day job and make a living just by blogging? I see all these success stories, but how much money can I really make?
These are some great tips, Vanessa! I agree — creating a niche and staying genuine would be on my list too. And I can totally relate to working 24/7, it’s definitely not easy blogging with a full-time job! On another note, love this off the shoulder number! Such pretty and bright colors for summer. Hope you have a wonderful Fourth of July!
Oh, a place where you had your first date with your husband, that’s so sweet! I loved your outfit, dear V., loved the top with the vibrant print! I liked that you could quit your corporate job, it was really such a heavy routine, balancing it with blogging! I agree with you on every aspect – I like high-low as well and I agree that we should support each other. My tip is to distance ourselves from people who do compare themselves to others, in a way to undermine the other – it did happen to me, through a blogger that I now got a very good distance from. These people only add negative vibes to us, and who wants that? So let’s be positive and keep on supporting each other! You are amazing, dear V., beautiful and with a great heart! Hugs and regards!

Relaxing of your stats is the best advice and also connecting. I LOVE your outfit girl, you look so stunning as always! Ps: I love how you took the pictures at the place where you had your first date!
You are such an inspiration, Vanessa! I have been blogging on and off from 3 years now. But this year I decided to take it seriously and work my butt off on it. It has been paying off. I would love to one day become a full-time blogger/YouTube vlogger! And I absolutely agree with you about helping each other out and being genuine! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, beautiful!

Such great advice Vanessa. Love your point about the Bible, saying encourage one another. So true. More of us need to implement that and we may begin to see improvement quicker as a blessing from God. Thanks for sharing!

I don’t think I’ll ever be a full-time blogger, but I loved your tips and I think that they are applicable to anyone looking to grow their platform! Wow, this is such an inspiring and real post, Vanessa. I truly appreciate you being so open and genuine about this topic because it’s one that many bloggers do shy away from and I can understand why, people aren’t always receptive of the idea and it places you in a more vulnerable spot. For THAT reason, I commend you and truly admire you because I know you’ve encouraged many bloggers, including myself, to keep going and remain persistent in the hard work we’re all doing. You are such a gem and deserve every bit of success and opportunity that comes your way! I love your tops and that Chanel, btw! I hope you have an amazing holiday weekend and thanks again for sharing, my beautiful friend!
